CAROL SERVICE - 11th December 2022

This year we held our annual Carol Service at the beautiful St. Mary's Church in Gladestry.  More than 40 of our members, family and friends braved the cold weather to attend.  Gladestry WI made us very welcome and had decorated the church wonderfully.  Many thanks to Reverend Rachel Storer for leading the service, to organist Heather Evans, to all the readers and to the Arts & Literature subcommittee for working hard putting the event together and providing refreshments.

LUNCH IN SUPPORT OF CALAN DVS - 2nd December 2022

In support of the 16 days of action to end Violence Against Women, the Public Affairs subcommittee held a lunch at Crossgates Community Centre in aid of local charity Calan DVS (Domestic Violence Services).  Lisa Waters, representing Calan, gave us a insight into their work and organisation and answered many and varied questions from the attendees.  We also learned how we could help on a regular basis.

Lunch was then served - a variety of soups with bread, followed by  puddings and refreshments.  We also held a raffle - with prizes kindly donated by the Blakemere Foundation.  A lively and enjoyable time which brightened a cold and wet day.

All the proceeds from the lunch will be donated to Calan DVS.

STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN - 21st November 2022

To promote the upcoming 16 Days of Action to end the scourge of violence against women, a very hardy group of our members braved the wind and rain to walk around Llandrindod Lake with placards, led by our Public Affairs Chair Libby Hughes.  This was in support of the annual Vigil which is held at the Senedd in Cardiff.

ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING - 12th November 2022

Our Federation ACM was held this year at Newbridge on Wye Community Centre where we were spendidly hosted by Cwmbach WI (catering) and Newbridge WI (refreshments and hall set up).  It was a wonderful afternoon to celebrate all that had been achieved over the last year, with reports from Board members followed by the presentation of certificates to WIs that have reached milestone anniversaries.  The Recruitment award was presented jointly to Aberedw WI and Nantmel WI.   We had displays of some of the outfits from our Transformation Fashion Show (September), as well as the Powys Radnor banner made for the Wales Centennial celebrations in 2015. We also held the second round of our Prize Draw (results below photos).

We were most fortunate to have the Chair of NFWI-Wales, Eirian Roberts, as our first speaker.  She gave a most entertaining and heart-warming talk of her life in the WI, from joining Ysbyty Ifan WI as a young woman from Young Farmers Club, right up to her current role, and all that the WI means to her.  Such an inspiration.

Our second speaker was beekeeper Meriet Duncan who was able to impart an amazing amount of information about the Honeybee in a most lively manner.  Everyone was captivated, and a lovely way to end the afternoon.

Jess Squires from Gladestry WI led us in singing Jerusalem to start the meeting and also the National anthems to complete the session.

TRANSFORMATION FASHION SHOW - 30th  September 2022

We first held a Transformation Fashion Show to support Big Green Week last year - it was such a success, we decided to hold it again this year. Our WI members were asked to focus on the damage done to our environment by the Fast Fashion Industry. We invited all WIs to take part by producing an outfit from any textile waste. From clothes or household textiles no longer worn, or spend no more than £20 in a charity shop which helps a good cause along the way. Here is how they did ……….

FEDERATION QUIZ - 18 May 2022

Our first Federation Quiz for two years - it's great to be back.

The Quiz took place at Dolau Community Centre - 19 WIs entered teams and we just about managed to fit them all in the Hall.  Tony Allport was an excellent Quizmaster and his wife Jane collated all the answers and managed the scoring sheet.
There were 7 varied rounds each with 10 questions, including a flower picture round during the refreshment break, so keeping everyone busy.  We finished with a WI specific round which was probably the most challenging.
Towards the end, it was a very close run thing with 5 or 6 teams vying for top spot.  The final result was:
1st place 69 points, Chatterbrook
Joint 2nd 66 points, Whitton and Rhayader
These three teams will go forward to the Inter Federation Quiz with Powys Montgomery and Powys Brecknock Federations at Crossgates Hall in late August.
